Sheshegwaning history and facts


Sheshegwaning is a First Nations reserve located on the northern shoreline, on the west side of Manitoulin Island, approximately 112 kilometers west of Little Current. Sheshegwaning translates in English to “the home of the rattle snake” and the land base is 10, 124 acres. The people of Sheshegwaning are of the Odawa Nation of Anishnaabek. The official languages of Sheshegwaning are Anishnaabemowin and English. Sheshegwaning Edbendaagzijig (ed-bin-dahg-zhi-jig) (Citizens) are about 500, and around 140 of who live on-reserve.
